Applying Fabric and Trim to Webbing

These instructions can be used to make straps for any project.

The light weight webbing featured in this tutorial is located here.
Applying Fabric to Webbing
This tutorial uses light weight webbing. Used alone, light weight webbing is not heavy enough to use with the hardware sets available on this site. Adding an extra layer of fabric or trim makes the webbing thick enough to work with the hardware.
1. Cut webbing to length needed for project. Cut 2 pieces of Pellon® Wonder-Under® the same size as webbing.
To prevent fraying, fuse cut ends of webbing by passing the webbing several times through flame of a lit candle. Hold webbing just above the flame in the heat glow to prevent a heavily melted, charred area. Properly fused area will be a little stiff, but no longer fraying.

2. Cut fabric twice as wide as webbing and 1″ longer.
Note: only a portion of the strap is shown in the photos.

Two different finishes can be achieved. With the fabric covering the webbing completely, from side to side or with edges of the webbing visible.

For a strap with fabric covering side to side, use the entire piece of fabric as instructed in cutting instructions above. (step 2) To produce a strap that will allow edges of webbing to show, trim 1/4″ from one long edge of fabric piece as shown below. Continue to Step 3 below for both finishes.

3. Using webbing as a guide, fold short ends of fabric piece under to fit to length of webbing, press ends in place.

4. Fold long edges of fabric piece to center and press in place.

Quick tip. Wrap fabric around webbing, one size smaller than webbing base and press into place. This produces an even, uniform strip. Remove webbing and go to step 6.

5. Remove paper backing from one piece of Wonder-Under®.
6. Open fabric piece and lay Wonder-Under® down center, trimming to fit within pressed lines if necessary. Press into place. Allow piece to cool completely, then peel paper backing off.

7. Refold fabric over Wonder-Under® and press in place.

8. Trim second piece of Wonder-Under® so it is slightly narrower than fabric piece.
9. Lay trimmed piece of Wonder-Under®, paper side up, on back side of fabric piece. Press in place.

10. Allow piece to cool completely, then peel paper backing off.
11. Center fabric piece on webbing, Wonder-Under® side down. Press in place, then stitch along edges. Strap is finished, ready to use in project.

Applying Trim to Webbing
1. Cut webbing to length needed for project. Project shown uses two widths of different color webbing stitched together in center.
2. Cut piece of trim 1″ longer than webbing. Cut 1 piece of Pellon® Wonder-Under® the same size as trim.

3. Using webbing as a guide, fold short ends of trim piece under to fit to length of webbing, press ends in place. (Depending on content of trim, fusing ends may be an option, trim to fit webbing piece.)
4. Trim piece of Wonder-Under® so it is slightly narrower than trim piece.
5. Lay trimmed piece of Wonder-Under®, paper side up, on back side of trim piece. Trim to fit, if necessary. Press in place.

12. Allow piece to cool completely, then peel paper backing off.
13. Center trim piece on webbing, Wonder-Under® side down. Press in place, then stitch along edges of trim. Strap is finished, ready to use in project.
